About Institutional Links

Newton Institutional Links (IL) provides grants for the development of research and innovation collaborations between the UK and Thailand. The research facilitated by these grants tackles local development needs and challenges such as extreme weather conditions, access to affordable health care, food and energy security.

The grants are intended to provide small-scale seed funding to:

  • start and develop collaborations between academic groups, departments and institutions in partner countries and the UK
  • support the exchange of expertise and research knowledge
  • establish local hubs for UK-partner country activities.

Calls for Institutional Links 2020/21

Calls for applications for Institutional Links 2020/21 is now closed. There are two funding partners for the IL2020/21 call:

  1. Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (OPS), 

  2. National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT).

Office of Permanent Secretary (OPS)

Co-funding partner for IL 2015 - present

Formerly known as Office of Higher Education Commission (OHEC), the Office of Permanent Secretary (OPS), Ministry of Higher Education Science, Research and Innovation administer and deliver the National development agenda strategies for the Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation reform. It also focuses on increasing the capacity of higher education institutions, upskilling of manpower, and supporting life-long learning. 

National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT)

Co-funding partner for IL 2020 (present)

National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) works as a research funding agency according to the government's 20 Years Strategy (2017-2036) and the 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2017-2021), mainly to support research that response to country's grand challenge including, current economic, social and political changes domestically and internationally.

Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO)

Co-funding partner for IL 2015 and 2019

Formerly known as the National Science and Technology Innovation Policy Office (STI), the Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO) now supports and recommends policy development in Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation. Its new role is also responsible for planning for budget and funding in alignment with the national development strategies.

Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI)

Co-funding partner for IL 2016 - 2019

Formerly known as the Thailand Research Fund (TRF), the Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI) now creates and formulates strategic policies in science, research and an innovation plan for the country. With its new roles, TSRI is now responsible for policy deployment and budget allocation for research operators.
