Arrival and introduction

Arrival at the airport and taxis

We ask you to get your own taxi from the airport to the hotel. Note the limousines and private taxis on offer in the arrival hall are more expensive so you are advised to get a public taxi – there is usually a queue system for these.

Make sure that the driver uses the meter. The driver will usually ask if you want to take the tollway, (highway/expressway). You should say yes, as we will pay the toll fees and it takes much, much longer if you don’t. Note you will have to pay these fees yourself, probably two fees of 70THB each.

The project will reimburse taxi fares up to 450THB without receipts.

Trains

If you arrive at Suvarabhumi airport, there is a very long queue for taxis, and, if you don’t have much luggage, you may wish to take the train. This will take around the same time as a taxi.

Note, more information about airports, arrival, taxis etc. is available in the “Life in Thailand” section of this website.

Hotel

We usually put people in the Aspen Suites hotel. A map of the location can be viewed here.

Taxi drivers will usually know where “Soi 2 Sukhumvit” is. Note the hotel is almost at the end of the Soi (road), on the left.

If you come by train, change from the airport link railway at Phaya Thai station and get the BTS (Skytrain) to Phloen Chit station. The hotel is a short walk from there.

Arrival at induction

The induction will take place at the British Council offices at Siam Square. A map of the location can be viewed here.

The best way to get there is to take the Aspen Hotel buggy to the end of the road, then walk to Phloen Chit station. Get a ticket to Siam Square station, which is 2 stops down the line. The best exit is exit 4. The British Council offices are a 5-minute walk from the BTS station, but leave a bit longer as you will probably get lost. Please arrive in sufficient time to get a visitors pass and be ready for a 9.00am start.

Dress for induction

Please wear smart casual attire for the induction.

Induction

We aim to give you a comprehensive induction which will include elements such as:

  • Project background
  • The aims of the training course
  • HR induction
  • Cultural induction
  • Safety briefing
  • ICT briefing and induction
  • Child Protection briefing
  • Introduction to the course materials
  • The Teachers’ needs and training
  • Time for you to start planning for your first week training
  • Boot Camp monitoring and evaluation framework and standardisation
  • Administration for the courses

Work permit and work permit medical

During the induction week, we will also help you to sort out your work permit. This involves getting a medical. Note that this is different from the British Council employment medical but the work permit medical is a formality and usually does not involve any kind of medical examination as is evident from the advert here. When you have completed your medical we will assist you to attend the immigration offices to get your work permit.

Opening a bank account

Once you have your work permit, you’ll be able to open a bank account so we hope to assist you with this too.

We would recommend opening the bank account with the branch located in your location. This is to avoid bank fees when you withdraw money from ATM machines locally.

Penang trip

Just to give you advance notice, for reasons to do with Thailand’s complicated visa system, we will ask you to leave Thailand at some point within 90 days of your arrival for a brief trip to Penang to get a second Non-immigrant ‘B’ visa. Note that this trip will count as working days and the project will pay the costs of this trip.
